Rep. Baker & Senators Gomes and Moore are each sponsoring a 1-year scholarship at The Daniel Trust Awards

May 2, 2018

(L-R): State Rep. Andre Baker, State Senator Ed Gomes and State Senator Marilyn Moore

Daniel Trust Foundation, an award-winning youth development nonprofit organization with offices in Bridgeport, Connecticut and New York City, is pleased to announce that State Representative Andre Baker and State Senators Ed Gomes and Marilyn Moore, are each sponsoring a 1-year scholarship at The 5th Annual Daniel Trust Awards on June 7, 2018 through their scholarship fund at the Bridgeport Public Education Fund.

The Daniel Trust Awards serves as Daniel Trust Foundation’s annual awards dinner, where seniors graduating from the Foundation’s High School Mentoring Program become Scholars in the College Scholarship Program, and local high school teachers get the opportunity to be honored and recognized by the Scholars.

This generous contribution would not have been possible without The Black and Puerto Rican Caucus and State Senator Marilyn Moore’s belief in the mission and vision of Daniel Trust Foundation. Our President and CEO Daniel Trust met Senator Moore at the Bridgeport Child Advocacy Coalition annual breakfast in 2016, where he introduced himself and the work he does with young people, and invited her to attend The 3rd Annual Daniel Trust Awards on June 23, 2016, so she can witness firsthand the impact of his work in the community. Thankfully, Senator Moore accepted Daniel’s invitation and attended the awards dinner.

Inspired by Heather Mooney’s short film TRUST, which brought her to tears, Senator Moore came on stage and donated $1,000 to Daniel Trust Foundation. This moment was very magical for everyone that attended the event. “I will never forget that moment when Senator Moore came on stage, shared how she was moved by my work and decided to invest in it,” said Daniel Trust, President and CEO of Daniel Trust Foundation. “I didn’t expect that to happen, especially since I had just met her, so I just started crying when she did that. I work very hard to secure resources for my students and Senator Moore made me feel like I was doing the right thing.”

That same year, in 2016, Senator Moore volunteered her time and came to share her personal story and work experience with students in the Foundation’s high school mentoring program in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Last year, Daniel invited Senator Moore to have coffee with him, so he can give her an update on the impact of her 2016 investment in the Foundation. At the meeting, Senator Moore was inspired to support the event again and said she would invite State Representative Andre Baker and State Senator Ed Gomes to support and join her at The Daniel Trust Awards this year.
