In this week’s #AskDanielTrust, Sapna asks: What advice do you have for youths who are trying to be successful but lack support and motivation (both from themselves and others)? What can they do in their everyday lives and what can they tell themselves that can push them closer to achievement?
Sapna, this is a great question. From my experience, I know how difficult it can be for a young person to be successful when no one is supporting their goals.
I also know that when you lack support from the people you love the most, like your family and friends, that can cause you to not be motivated to pursue your goals. But, I have good news for you, Sapna.
When no one seems to understand your ideas or wants to support your goals, there are 3 things you can do in your everyday life to help motivate and push you closer to achievement.
1. Build your self awareness and confidence
The most important investment you can make in yourself is to know who you truly are. I believe when you are self aware, it helps you become confident. When we are ourselves and confident in our skills and talents, it allows us to dream big and accomplish everything we set our minds to.
So, how do you become self aware and confident?
Start by learning about your strengths and weaknesses. You can do this by taking a personality test online or by finding a trusted friend or advisor who can tell you the truth about what you do well and what you need to improve.
Being self aware and confident doesn’t happen just like that. It’s something that happens over the years with maturity and experience as long as you invest in your personal development and keep a positive and growth mindset.
If I wasn’t self aware and confident, I don’t think I would be happy and at peace with the person that I am today. You know why? Because there are many friends and family members who tried to discourage me from pursuing my dreams, both personally and professionally, but because I was self aware and confident in my skills and talents, their actions were meaningless to me.
2. You are the key to your own success
The most important thing you have to understand is that you are the key to your own success. If you have a unique talent and you believe deep down in your heart that you are supposed to pursue that talent, then you should go out there and do it without wanting validation from anyone.
Yes, it's great to get support from other people when you want to be successful, but the reality is, most people will not support your goals at the beginning, especially if they are big.
If what you want to do is truly your calling, you will find people who will support and give you the resources you need to achieve your goals.
Everything I have accomplished up to this point has been because I’ve trained myself to believe that I am the key to my own success. If I had waited for people to support and motivate me, I would not have started Daniel Trust Foundation and we would not be where we are today.
If you have a goal you want to accomplish, take action now and start working on it. If you wait for people to support you, you will never accomplish anything.
3. Learn from successful leaders in your field
As someone who lacks support from others, the best thing you can do for yourself is to learn from people who are successful in your field of interest. When you commit to learning from other successful people, it gives you an idea of what you could be like in the future.
You don’t have to personally know a successful person in order to learn from them. Today, most successful people have a presence on social media and they are constantly sharing their knowledge and wisdom with us.
If a successful person you admire has a presence on social media, follow them and learn everything you can from them. I believe some of the best mentors you could ever have are successful people you don’t personally know.
Naturally, I am a self-starter and learner. Many of the skills and talents that I have today, I learned them from afar by watching successful people I wanted to be like. I still do this today. Whenever I need inspiration, I read articles or watch videos of successful people that I admire. You should try doing this too.
Do the above 3 things and you will be successful
Sapna, I hope my answer to your question is helpful to you and other young people around the world. Of course there are many other things you can do, but the 3 things I have shared is what I think are most important if you want to be successful, but lack support and motivation from yourself and others.
