In this week’s #AskDanielTrust, Jackie says: Daniel, I am in my early 20’s and I’ve been trying to find a full-time job, but it’s been very difficult. Do you have any advice and tips that can help young people like me find job opportunities during these challenging times?
Jackie, this is a great question. I am very aware that because of COVID-19, many companies have gone out of business and those that are still open are not hiring. It's tough to find a job right now, but I believe there are some companies that are hiring and are looking for young people like you.
In this column and vlog, I am going to share 5 strategies and tips young people can use to find and secure job opportunities during these challenging times.
1. Make sure your resume and cover letter are perfect
The first thing you should do to make sure you secure a job opportunity during these challenging times is to make sure your resume and cover letter are perfectly put together.
Your resume and cover letter are the first two pieces of information a hiring manager sees when you apply for a job. If your resume and cover letter contain errors and misspellings, chances are the person reviewing your application will just put it in the trash.
If you are not sure how your resume or cover letter should be formatted, simply do some research on Google for examples of a great resume or cover letter to give you an idea of how you can format yours.
I highly recommend you get someone with more experience to review your resume and cover letter and give you feedback on it.
Making sure your resume and cover letter are well put together for the job you are applying for is the first step to making sure your job application is reviewed by a hiring manager.
2. Apply to as many jobs as you qualify for as you can
Once you’ve put together your resume and cover letter and you’ve made sure that it’s error free, it’s time for you to start applying for jobs that align with your skills and talent.
You can search for job opportunities using websites such as Indeed, Linkedin or other websites in your country where companies post job opportunities.
Apply to as many jobs as you can because that will increase your chances of being called in for an interview. But, make sure you only apply for positions that you qualify for. Otherwise, your applications will just be ignored and rejected.
If you don’t already have a Linkedin account, I highly recommend you create one right now. Make sure your profile picture is professional and transfer the experience you listed in your resume to your Linkedin.
Simply put, Linkedin is like your online resume.
When you apply for a job, there is a big chance that the hiring manager will search your name on Google to see what kind of information that comes up about you. It’s always nice if your Linkedin is among the first things a hiring manager sees when they search your name online.
3. Ask friends to recommend you for job opportunities
One of the best ways to secure a job opportunity during these challenging times is to ask your friends and family members who work if their employers are hiring.
I know many companies are not hiring because of COVID-19, but there are some companies out there that are hiring and looking for employees like you.
I highly recommendation you reach out to your friends and family members and tell them that you are job searching and if they become aware of a job opening at their company, they should let you know. Even better, send them your perfectly done resume and cover letter to show them that you are serious.
I know many young people who have secured jobs because their friends or family members recommended them for a position at their company. Start texting and emailing all your friends and family members right now.
4. Prepare and be ready for your job interview
If you’ve done everything that I’ve shared above, chances are that soon you will be invited to have a job interview either via the phone, online or in person.
It’s very important that before you go into the interview, you know everything about the position you applied for, the person interviewing you and the company.
There is nothing that turns off a hiring manager more than a candidate who comes into an interview unprepared and is unable to answer basic questions about the position or company.
My recommendation would be that before you go into the interview, take some time to review the company’s website to learn about their mission, vision, values, products and services, and their leadership team. Also, check out their social media accounts and see what type of content they share.
If you go into the interview and you answer all the questions they ask you and show that you know the ins and out of their business, chances are you will be selected for the job. Preparation is key to making sure you land that job you are searching for right now.
5. Follow up with a thank you email or note
Let’s say you had an interview, it went very well and you are waiting for that phone call from the hiring manager telling you congratulations and you’ve secured the job.
I highly recommend you send the person who interviewed you a thank you email or handwritten note right after the interview to thank them for the time they took to interview you.
From my experience, I’ve found that hiring managers love getting thank you emails or handwritten notes from job candidates after the interview.
Even if you don’t get the job that you interviewed for, if the person who interviewed you liked you and they believe you would be suited for another position at the company, chances are that they will recommend you apply for that other position and you will be hired.
Always remember that, job searching is a journey and it’s about building relationships with the people you come in contact with on the journey. Keep a positive attitude and at the right time and moment, you will secure that job that you’ve been searching for.
